Welcome to Computer Science Week! Let’s explore how computers help us every day! Phones, video games, kitchen appliances, cars, and more, use computer science to function. Computer science is about teaching computers how to do things. Just like learning to ride a bike or tie your shoes, we can teach computers to solve problems and play games. Computers use code, a special language that uses patterns. Binary code is a type of language that uses two symbols to commmunciate. Today we’re going to be using binary coding to make a Binary bracelet!

VOCABULARY

  • Binary Code: based on a system in which there are only two possible states

  • Code: Patterns that are the language of robots

  • Computer Science: the study of computers and their processes

GUIDING QUESTION

  • How has computer science advanced our daily lives?

MATERIALS

  • Beads (2 different colors)

  • Pipe cleaners or any other string like material

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Find the first letter of your first and last name then decide which color beads you want to use. Decide what color bead represents a black rectangle and what color bead represents a white rectangle. Place those beads on your initials.

Insert your beads onto your pipe cleaner or any other string-like material and tie. You have created your own binary bracelet!
