Happy World Ocean Day!
Activity best for children ages three and up

World Ocean Day is an important day that takes place every year on June 8. The day is dedicated to raising awareness for a healthy ocean and stable climate in collaboration with youth leaders and organizations from everywhere to keep working together for a better future. Today we will do an art piece using recycled materials that we can repurpose to create something new.

VOCABULARY

  • Recycle: the process of taking materials ready to be thrown away and converting (changing) them into reusable materials.
  • Repurpose: taking an object and creating a new way to use it.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • What are some things you can do to keep our oceans clean?

MATERIALS

  • Colorful tissue paper
  • Construction paper (blue or white)
  • Glue or tape
  • Scissors
  • Bottle caps
  • Googly eyes
  • Recycled boxes
  • White crayon (or any other color)

DIRECTIONS

STEP 2

Grab any recycled material that might be a great fit for the sand. We are using a cardboard cereal box! Cut it out into small pieces and glue them on a construction paper.

STEP 3

Next, cut green tissue paper into strips, crumble them up, and then glue them to form the seaweed.

STEP 4

Then, grab a bottle cap to create a fish. Start by adding one googly eye and cutting red tissue paper into triangles for the tail. For added detail, take a white crayon to draw bubbles and extra designs around the fish.
