Earth Day Slime

STREAM Activity: Earth Day Slime

Let’s Put the Art in Earth!

Activity best for children ages four and up

Do you know what planet we live on? Drum roll….If you said Earth, you’re absolutely right! Earth is made up of 71% water and it’s also made up of important minerals like iron. One of the most essential things of all is oxygen, which we need to breathe everyday! Earth gives us so much like clean air, fresh water, animals, and plants, that’s why it’s so important to take care of it.

Earth even has its own day called ‘Earth Day’ which reminds us all that every small action helps keep Earth and the environment safe and healthy for everyone. We can help by recycling, planting trees, or saving energy by turning off lights! To celebrate Earth Day, we’ll be making Earth-inspired slime, a fun and creative way to remember just how awesome our planet is!

  • Oxygen: The air we breathe that helps up and animals stay alive.

  • Environment: The land, air, and water around us.

  • Recycling: Turning old items like paper, plastic, and glass into new things.

GUIDING QUESTION

  • What is your favorite thing about Earth?

MATERIALS

  • Gloves

  • 2 bottles of Elmer’s white glue

  • 1 teaspoon of borax

  • 1 cup of hot water, 2 cups of water

  • 3 bowls

  • Spoon or mixing spatula

  • Blue and green food dye

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Put on some gloves and find a medium-sized bowl, and mix one cup of hot water with 1 tsp of borax. Make sure to stir well so that borax dissolves completely.

Add Borax to a bowl

STEP 2

In your second bowl, add 5 to 6 ounces of Elmer’s glue with ½ cup of regular temperature water. Make sure to mix well to water down the glue. Repeat this step in another bowl!

Add glue and water

STEP 3

Add blue food coloring to one glue bowl and green food coloring to the remaining bowl and mix well! (6-10 drops works magic!)

Add food coloring to the mix

STEP 4

Once you have mixed the food dye in, pour one of the glue mixtures into the borax bowl and mix with a spoon or with your hands (wearing gloves!). Once it solidifies, you may take it out and repeat with the remaining glue mixture.

Tip: If your slime is too watery, you can add more glue to thicken the consistency!

Mix the ingredients until it becomes slime

STEP 5

You can now combine both slime mixtures into one bowl and mix!

Mix the two colors together

STEP 6

Voila! You have created your own Earth slime!
