Art Activity: Monet Water Lilies

Create a water lily masterpiece just like Claude Monet!
Activity best for children age 4 and up

Claude Monet was born and raised in Paris, France. Monet was very interested in how light changed and interacted with color. His most famous paintings are of water lilies. He painted the water lilies over and over again during different seasons and times of the day to observe how the light changed the colors he was seeing! Today, you will get to make your own version of Monet’s famous water lilies.

MATERIALS

  • Construction paper

  • Glue stick

  • Cupcake liners or coffee filters

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Choose one piece of construction paper to be your base.

STEP 2

Rip the other pieces of construction paper to make long rectangular pieces. Be sure to set aside one green piece of paper.

STEP 3

Glue the rectangular strips to your base.

STEP 4

Rip the green construction paper that you set aside into a large rectangular or circular piece. Glue this on your paper (these are your lily pads!)

STEP 5

Glue a cupcake liner to your paper. If you are using a coffee filter, you may need to rip or fold it into a smaller size.

STEP 6

Crumple and glue a small piece of pink (or any color!) paper to the center of your cupcake liner to complete the inside of your flower.
