Castanets

Activity best for children age 3 and up

During this time, you are exposing children to an aspect of a country’s culture. Today we are going to learn a little bit more about Spain’s culture! Culture can include language, history, scientific discoveries, geography, animals, art, and so much more!

Spain is a country located in Europe. The Spanish name for Spain is España. Spain is known for a special dance called the flamenco. The flamenco is often danced at special occasions. Sometimes while dancing the flamenco, people hold a special instrument called a castanet. A castanet is a percussion instrument that is sometimes called a clacker. It’s a small, handheld instrument that dancers use to help keep the beat. Today you are going to make your own castanet at home!

MATERIALS

  • Small paper plate or cardboard cut into a circle

  • Markers, crayons, colored pencils, or paint

  • Glue or tape

  • Buttons, coins, or metal washers

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Fold the cardboard or paper plate in the middle. Crease lightly along the fold, but don’t crease too much! The castanet should still be able to easily spring and bounce back open and closed.

STEP 2

Decorate using markers, crayons, colored pencils, or paint.

STEP 3

Glue or tape coins, buttons, or metal washers along the top of the inside edges of the castanet.

STEP 4

Play your instrument!
